Healing Modalities
I am trained and certified to help you in each of the following modalities.
Body-centered Psychotherapy
Body-centered psychotherapy helps you address your concerns not only through talking, but also by helping you become deeply aware of your bodily sensations as well as your emotions, images, and behavior. You become more conscious of how you breathe, move, speak, and where you experience feelings in your body. Attending to your nonverbal felt experience allows you to “get in touch” with important psychological or emotional material that had previously been inaccessible through words alone.
EMDR
Trauma lives in our emotions, beliefs about ourselves, and in the body. Trauma can be “obvious,” such as sexual assault, a car accident, witnessing violence, etc., or less obvious, such as being criticized or emotionally neglected as a child. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a method for treating trauma, that was developed by Francine Shapiro in the 1980’s.
Attachment-focused Therapy
As babies and children, we needed at least one safe attachment figure in order to thrive. I believe we never outgrow this need. The safe attachment and healing that occurs from the therapeutic relationship can lead to a more secure relationship within oneself, as well as closer and more authentic relationships with others.
Emotionally-focused Couples Therapy
Learned historical patterns and unconscious emotions can block your ability to experience the connection and intimacy that you long to have with your partner. Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFT) was developed by Dr. Sue Johnson in the 1980’s. Sue noticed that couples were in distress when they didn’t know on a deep level if the other person was truly there for them and could be counted on to be emotionally responsive and engaged.
Voice Dialogue
The Voice Dialogue process was developed by Doctors Hal and Sidra Stone over a couple of decades, beginning in the 1970’s. Although I trained with the Stones in the 80’s, I still consider it to be one of the most transformational tools in my therapy practice. Voice Dialogue is a method of contacting and bringing loving attention to various parts of yourself. In a collaborative spirit of curiosity, non-judgmental acceptance, and wonder, we will listen to and learn about the multitude of different aspects or “subpersonalities” within you.
Visualization
Visualization can be a powerful tool for healing and behavioral changes. You may be someone who gets images and pictures situations quite easily. Or you may not “see” anything. You may be someone who senses or feels images, rather than getting a clear picture. All of these can lead to transformation.
